PWI-WPT

Plasma Wave Investigation - Wire Probe Antenna (WPT)

[Figures 5a and 5b of Kasaba et al., 2020]

Measurement Principle

The WPT consists of two wire booms (WPT-S) with preamplifiers (WPT-Pre) installed on the spacecraft’s lower deck (Kasaba et al. 2020a; Karlsson et al. 2020). The WPT-S, together with its deployment unit, is installed outside of the lower deck. Via the long wire (length: 15 m) running from the preamp to the top of the antenna, the WPT-S is optimized for higher frequency measurements up to 10 MHz, where the antenna is capacitively coupled to the surrounding plasma. On the other hand, the WPT-Pre chassis is installed inside the lower deck, just on the side opposite the WPT-S unit, where the temperature conditions are less severe. The signal detected by the WPT is sent to the EWO and the SORBET receivers inside of the PME chassis.
